Welcome to the Grande
Cache Memorial IceBreaker Website
The Most Talked About
Tournament in West Central Alberta -
Celebrating 10 Years in
2007
Our first official "Memorial
IceBreaker Tournament" was hosted in 1998. The idea was to
create a tournament that would not only wrap up the hockey
season for our local teams, as well as provide us all with a way
to remember our fallen team mates and coaches. The committee
felt it would also be an excellent time to raise charity money
for people in need. At the time we were focusing on the Grande
Cache Children's Assistance Fund. Our initial goals were modest
at best. It was that if we raised $500 for charity, while
having a fun filled weekend for both hockey players and
spectators alike, we would have performed a tremendous community
service. To our absolute surprise, this amazingly supportive
community rallied behind our efforts and enabled us to present a cheque to the Grande Cache Children's Association Fund for a
whopping $5,000.
This popular event has blossomed into a much looked forward to
event annually and this coming 2007 year will be our 10th
anniversary. At the start of the 2001 Memorial tournament we
had distributed over $18,200 to local charities. As well the
overwhelming response required to add four more teams and turn
away other potential participants due to time constraints. To
date we still have more teams applying to participate then we
can accommodate. We have had to grow with the success of this
venture in order to keep up with the demand. The financial
intake for 2002 was an astounding $18,500 while 2003's
tournament netted $16,800 for the weekend. This does not take
into consideration the immense amount of business and good will
brought into this community on this fun filled weekend.
We are extremely proud to announce that to date, the Grande
Cache Memorial IceBreaker Hockey Tournament has raised over
$145,000 for local charities and groups!
Most importantly, however, in addition to a weekend of fun
filled hockey, camaraderie, entertainment and fund raising, our
tournament still remains a memorial event. We annually,
and publicly, as an entire community, take time to remember our
fellow hockey player's and coaches with whom we shared the
game. Those times will never be forgotten, neither will "Our Friends."
